Time for Gardening!!

This is a particularly exciting time of the year. The children at Dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach are once again getting started in the gardens. Dragonfly's Early Learning, has, in the past, had beautiful gardens full of fertile soil constructed in the yards to give the children the opportunity to experience gardening and to have major involvement in the gardens and what to plant in them

These garden beds were set up so that the children could be educated in various areas of nature such as:

* Knowing where their food comes from:

Until they become involved in a gardening programme, some children think that their food comes from the supermarket and so it does but this gives them the opportunity to learn more about how and where their food grows

* The value of water

Water is essential to life and is such a precious commodity and this is an opportunity to learn about water conservation and how to use water wisely.

* The gardening process from seeds to plants.

At Dragonfly's Early Learning, the process is mostly started from seed so that the children are exposed to the full life cycle of a plant from planting the seeds to sprouting and watching the plant grow till it is ready to be harvested

* Responsibility

Children learn responsibility by caring for the plants. They learn about cause and effect. If they don't have enough water, the plants will die. If the garden is left unweeded, it's very difficult to even find the plants.

* Physical activity

Gardening is not only fun but it is also productive. The gardens provide an opportunity to dig, rake, pull weeds and generally be active in the outdoors. Develop those muscles!!

In all, gardening provides a plethora of activities that also encourages lots of communication between the children particularly when the plants flower and begin to produce very tiny vegetables that allow the children to view the plant activity. Such excitement!!!
