Mulching the Gardens
Dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach, promotes the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Programme which is a garden to plate programme aimed at the Early learning age groups
The Summer months, December, January and February are difficult months to spend time in the gardens. These months are incredibly hot and many of our plants just don't survive.
At dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach, the children don their hats and gardening gloves, and we spend these months preparing our soil for planting at the beginning of March.... Autumn.
Given that the soil is planted out in Autumn, Winter and Spring, the nutrients in the soil are pretty well depleted by early Summer so this is the time to let the gardens stand fallow.
The children learn how to add nutrients to the soil and spend their time adding food scraps, paper scraps and mulch to their soil and giving it lots of water to create a rich, nutritious soil ready for planting.
They also spend time feeding their worms in the worm farm, which they find absolutely fascinating. Playing with worms is such fun!!!
