Morning Porridge

An important stage of development is when children are learning to feed themselves.

Children are encouraged to feed themselves to develop better eye-hand coordination.

First of all, they are learning independence and confidence, skills that they require throughout their years of early childhood and then, throughout their lives.

The feeding experience allows children to experience new sensations like different temperatures and textures. They develop important skills using fingers and hands for more complex movements.

As they become more experienced, they become more interested in feeding themselves. These signs of independence and readiness to self-feed can include grabbing the spoon while you are holding it and reaching for food from their own or your plate

Once they show an interest in feeding themselves, it is critical to provide as many opportunities as possible to practice this newfound skill. The key to mastering self-feeding is to let them try, try and try again

Most children become very proficient at self-feeding with spoons and forks between 18 and 24 months.
