Mark Making....Taking the First Steps

The children from the Bilby's Group at Dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach have been exploring mark making in different forms.

Mark-making is the first step into early literacy for these little ones and enables them to practice their pre-writing skills. Fine motor development has important implications for children's engagement in fine arts, drawing, and emergent writing skills. Practicing mark-making involves introducing and practicing pencil grips, while perfecting fine motor skills and pincer grips.

Fine motor skills involve all of the small muscles of the body, particularly those that control precise movements of the hands, wrists, feet toes lips, and tongue.

The children have been introduced to a variety of tools to explore and develop their skills, like using chalk on chalkboards, markers on whiteboards, and painting with their hands

I just love looking at these early drawings. If you ask them, they can tell you exactly what they have drawn!!
