Developing Individualism

When children are younger, they mimic their same-sex parent as a way of learning what is appropriate. Copying other children at this age reflects their own increasing social awareness.

Once they enter an Early Learning Centre, they begin to see themselves as part of a larger group and begin to work out how they "fit in"

Imitating others isn't really a bad thing. Not only are they deciding whom they admire so they adjust their behaviour to be more like that person or...to differentiate themselves for one reason or another

Many children strive to conform but children should be urged to feel comfortable doing their own "thing" if that is what is appropriate.

How about this little guy doing his own thing!! What beautiful hair!!

Obviously very comfortable doing his own thing, in fact, very proud of his beautiful hair!!
