Harvest Day at Dragonfly's!

The Stephanie Alexander Gardening Program is all about teaching children about food first-hand. Recently, we had a harvest day and all of the children got involved in harvesting, cooking and eating the food from our garden.


Here is a little update on the garden to kitchen process.


Planting and Growing

The first step in the kitchen garden process is the planting! The children have a blast getting their hands dirty and planting seeds in the garden. During this time, the children learn about how food grows, taking part in watering the plants and watching them grow.
















Harvesting

Once the produce is ready to be harvested, the children participate in picking the fruits, vegetables and herbs directly from the garden. They learn how to recognize when the produce is ripe and how to gently pick veggies from their plants without damaging them.











Preparing

Once the children have collected the product, they bring the harvest inside to wash. They then learn how to put together simple recipes, and their enjoyment and investment in their food is increased because they are able to take part in creating it!


Eating

The final step in the garden to kitchen process is eating! Children enjoy delicious meals made from fresh ingredients. Even the pickiest eaters will try new foods when they have had a hand in picking and preparing their meals.
