    Lets be Creative

At dragonfly's early Learning at Coolum Beach, we recognise that creativity fosters mental growth in children by providing opportunities to try out new ideas and new ways of thinking and problem solving along with self-expression and decision making These boys have created a double seat for the park and are allowing all of their friends to have a turn on their magnificently constructed park seat. Creative play such as this develops preschooler confidence, physical and thinkin

    Bilby's Mark Making

At Dragonfly's Early earning at Coolum Beach, we provide ample opportunity for the children to follow their talents. I just love to watch the earnestness and concentration that these little ones exhibit as they carry out their work! Mark making refers to the creation of different patterns, lines, textures, and shapes. This term is typically used to describe the scribbles that early years children make on paper with pens, pencils and crayons To learn more about us, at Dragonfl

    Exploring Numeracy Skills: Making Playdough

These little ones at Dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach are having fun measuring up the ingredients to make their own playdough. Children start learning numeracy skills from the time that they are born. This learning happens from watching and experiencing numeracy in action during everyday play and activities As children get older, they learn more numeracy and maths skills including size and measurement. Making everyday numeracy activities and experiences playful and

    Lime or Lemon Butter

Thinking about Christmas? This is such an expensive time of year so maybe think about what you can make to ease the financial burden. I always save the nice jars during the year to use at this time of year. Lime or lemon butter in a nice jar with a ribbon is a very special gift. Limes are actually a bit expensive right now so perhaps use lemons. Lemon butter is just as nice. It runs rings around what you buy in the supermarket. Store in the refrigerator till you are ready to

    Spiders at Haloween

Spiders!!! I just need to keep these little suckers in here!! The reason that spiders appear to be such a symbol of Haloween is because of their connection with witches. Spiders, along with rats and black cats were believed to be the evil companions of witches in medieval times. Generally, spiders prefer to dwell in dark places so can be very easily linked to the witches about at Haloween What fun they all had!!! Will it Sink or Will it Float

Science plays a huge part in the education of the children at Dragonfly's Early Learning at Coolum Beach. The possums have enjoyed water play as the weather warms up. A sink or float experiment is a great activity to choose when introducing basic science in early learning. The children used recycled materials to create boats with their educators. They tested their boats in their lake to see if they floated or sank. Using their investigation skills they talked about what might

    One of Lifes' Challenges

The Educators at Dragonflys Early Learning at Coolum Beach have been focusing on building the gross motor skills of the children and trying challenges on different climbing equipment. The "rock wall" (it's actually timber) has been very popular. Concentration and the use of hand-eye coordination to ascertain where hands and feet need to be placed to ensure safe climbing was the greatest challenge. The children have shown great confidence and self-awareness as they reach the

    Day for Daniel

A Day for Daniel is such an important day on the Community Calendar at Dragonflys Early Learning at Coolum Beach. On this day we remember Daniel Morcombe, taken from the roadside in 2003. This is Australia's largest ever child safety education and awareness programme. This event is held annually on the last Friday in October. This is a day to bring child safety and protection to the notice of all Australians. It is also the day to begin to make children aware of "Stranger Dan

Extended Project: What Lives in Stumers Creek?

About 1 km North of Coolum Beach, Stumers Creek enters the ocean via the beach. Dragonfly's Early Learning Centre at Coolum Beach is very close to Stumers Creek. The children from Dragonfly's Early Learning take part in a Bush Kindy Project which enables them to get out into the community and many hours are spent in discovery at Stumers Creek. What lives in Stumers Creek is a subject for avid discussion and the interest in this has evolved from conversations the children have

    Salad Days

With the hot days of summer still with us, we often look for food that is refreshing. We so often turn to salads because they are light, easy to prepare and most of all refreshing This particular Mexican Salad fits the bill and has become a new family favourite. Mexican Salad will keep for several days in the fridge but it also makes an amazing Mexican Frittata. Just beat up 4 eggs with a little salt and pepper and add to the leftover salad in a pan. Add a little cheese to th

    Very Messy Dinosaurs and Art

Two things that children enjoy equally are dinosaur play and artwork. We thought that to combine these interests would make them very happy. Here we see the evolution of what started out to be about dinosaurs. The children painted the feet of their dinosaurs and made footprints which they put all over their cardboard. Their art experience progressed as the children led with their ideas. They began to paint the dinosaurs bodies as well as the feet, then roll the bodies onto th
